Privacy
Short version: we do not sell personal data. Location is used for the request you make. Signed-in Outdoor Journal data lives on our servers so you can use it across devices; guest shortlists stay on your browser until you sign in.

Accounts & sign-in
You can browse without an account. Optional sign-in uses a magic link emailed to you and/or Google Sign-In. We store your email, optional display name and avatar, and account preferences. Session auth uses an httpOnly cookie (ood_user_session) so the sign-in token is not readable by page scripts. Signing out clears that cookie. We may also keep a small local profile cache (name, avatar URL) for faster UI — clear site data to remove it.
Magic-link requests may use Cloudflare Turnstile (bot check) when configured. We do not use Turnstile for advertising.
Outdoor Journal (signed in)
When you are signed in, favorites, custom lists, visit notes, and trip plans you save are stored in our database and tied to your account so they sync across devices. You can edit or delete these items in your account. Deactivating an account (via admin or support) blocks further sign-in; ask us if you need journal data removed.
Saved places (guest / local)
Without signing in, saved places can live in this browser’s local storage. They are not available on other devices. After you sign in, we may merge a local shortlist into your cloud favorites. Clearing site data or using “Clear all” on Saved removes local copies.
Location
If you allow it, your browser may share approximate location so we can sort places by distance and show “near me” results. Coordinates are sent to our API for that request (and optionally to Open-Meteo for weather). We do not store a continuous location history or track you across visits for advertising.
Search, trips & weather
Search queries and trip-planning inputs may be logged in aggregate to improve ranking and product quality. Weather comes from Open-Meteo using a coarse lat/lng grid and a short-lived cache — not a personal advertising profile.
Feedback
Optional place feedback (helpful / missing amenities) is stored so we can improve data quality. Do not include personal information in free-text notes. Feedback is not used for advertising.
Analytics
When enabled by site settings, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with IP anonymization to understand page views and basic interaction events (for example clicks marked for measurement). GA4 is operated by Google under its own terms. You can use browser controls or extensions to limit analytics cookies where available.
Install / PWA
If you install the app, a service worker may cache shell pages offline. Cached pages stay on your device; uninstalling or clearing site data removes them.
